The Science of Electrolytes: More Than Just Salt Water

Most people think electrolytes are just for athletes or people who are sick. Wrong. Electrolytes are essential minerals that literally every cell in your body needs to function. And most of you aren't getting enough.
What Electrolytes Actually Do
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in water. The big players: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. They regulate nerve function, muscle contraction, hydration, blood pH, and tissue repair.
When people say "drink more water," they're only telling half the story. Water follows electrolytes. If your electrolyte levels are low, water passes through you without actually hydrating your cells. You can drink a gallon of water and still be dehydrated at the cellular level.
Sodium: The Misunderstood Mineral
We've been told for decades that sodium is the enemy. For sedentary people eating processed food, excessive sodium IS a concern. But for active people who sweat regularly? Sodium restriction can actually hurt performance.
You lose 500-1,500mg of sodium per hour of intense exercise. A single training session can deplete 1,000-3,000mg. If you're not replacing it, you're experiencing fatigue, cramping, and reduced performance — and blaming your programming or motivation.

When to Take Electrolytes
Before training: Pre-loading with electrolytes 30-60 minutes before exercise improves hydration status and delays fatigue.
During training: Sip electrolytes throughout sessions lasting more than 30 minutes. Don't wait until you're thirsty — by then, you're already 1-2% dehydrated.
Throughout the day: Electrolytes aren't just for training. Your brain uses sodium and potassium for every thought. Your muscles need them for every contraction. Daily electrolyte intake supports energy, focus, and overall function.
