The Busy Person's Guide to Workout Nutrition

Read time: 5 minutes
You work 50+ hours a week. You have family obligations. You squeeze in workouts at 5 AM or 7 PM. And every nutrition article assumes you have a personal chef and unlimited meal prep time. Let's fix that.
The Minimum Effective Dose
Forget the perfect diet. Focus on the 20% of nutrition that delivers 80% of results. For someone who trains regularly, that comes down to three things: hit your protein target, eat enough total calories, and don't be chronically dehydrated.
That's it. Everything else is optimization. And optimization only matters after the basics are locked in.
Protein: The Non-Negotiable
Aim for 0.8-1g per pound of bodyweight. The simplest approach: include a protein source at every meal and have one protein shake on days you can't hit your number through food alone. Don't overthink timing. Total daily intake is what matters.
Quick protein sources for busy people: Greek yogurt, rotisserie chicken, canned tuna, hard-boiled eggs (prep a dozen on Sunday), deli turkey, protein bars (check the sugar content), and shakes.
Meal Prep: The 30-Minute Method
You don't need to spend Sunday afternoon cooking 21 meals. Cook two proteins and two carb sources in bulk. That's it. Rice and chicken. Ground turkey and sweet potatoes. Mix and match throughout the week. Add vegetables from a frozen bag — microwave for 3 minutes. Done.
If even that feels like too much, invest in a slow cooker. Throw protein and vegetables in before work. Dinner is ready when you get home. Zero skill required.
Training Day Nutrition
Pre-workout (if training in the morning): Something light 30-60 minutes before — a banana, toast with peanut butter, or even just your pre-workout supplement. Training completely fasted isn't ideal for performance, but it's better than skipping the session entirely.
During training: Water isn't enough if you're sweating hard. Electrolytes matter. TFx HYDRATE in your water bottle solves this without overthinking it.
Post-workout: Get protein in within 2 hours. A shake is fine. A real meal is better. Don't stress about the exact minute.
The Daily Non-Negotiables
Take your TFx FOUNDATION greens every morning. This takes 30 seconds and covers micronutrient gaps that a busy schedule inevitably creates. Drink at least half your bodyweight in ounces of water. Hit your protein number.
Three things. Every day. That's the foundation everything else builds on.
Progress Over Perfection
The best nutrition plan is the one you actually follow. A "70% perfect" diet done consistently beats a "100% perfect" diet done for two weeks before burning out. Build habits, not meal plans. Consistency compounds.
Not perfect. Better. Not someday. Every day.
